Hot Stone Massage

“LaStone therapy” with its roots in Native American traditions & beliefs was developed in Arizona by Mary Nelson in 1993. The principle of utilising heated stones to massage the body (“hot stone massage”) arrived in the UK later in the 20th Century & has become a firm favourite here, especially in the cooler months.

In Russia there is a tradition of using heated smooth black stones to line the bottom of the bathtub, before lying down on them & enjoying a good soak in the soothing warm water with heat emanating from the stones. In ancient China, heated stones were used to relieve tired muscles with the practice believing to date back to the pre-Shang Dynasty (2000-1500 BC). Cowboys in the American mid-west often heated stones in their campfires before placing them under their sleeping blankets, while Native American women would use a sun-heated stone heliotherapy) on their stomach to relieve painful menstrual symptoms.

Hot Stone Massage uses pure “Basalt” volcanic stones to deliver the massage movements (gliding over previously applied oil), controlled by the therapists’ hands. Stones can be planed under or on the body during the course of the treatment to allow the remaining heat within the stones to penetrate & warm the body, as often seen advertising this style of massage.
